Imagen is one of the most popular AI editing tools for wedding photographers, and for a lot of studios it works. But "it works" and "it fits how I want to run my business" are different questions. If you are reading this, one of them probably has a "no" next to it.
Quick answer: the right Imagen alternative depends on why you are leaving. If you want another AI app with culling and editing in one place, look at Aftershoot. If you want humans to do the editing with no review on your side, look at a plan-based editing company (for steady year-round volume) or a per-wedding studio like RawFixer (for seasonal volume). If you want one person who knows your work, hire a private editor.
A note on bias: we run RawFixer, which is one of the options below. We've described each one from its own published information and said plainly where ours is the wrong fit.
What Imagen is, and what it costs
Imagen is an AI editing service that learns from your past edits (a Personal AI Profile) or lets you use ready-made "talent" profiles, then applies them to your Lightroom catalog. On its pricing page at the time of writing, it offers:
- Pay-as-you-go: AI colour correction from $0.05 per photo plus a $7 monthly base fee, with add-on tools (crop, straighten, subject mask, skin smoothing and so on) at around $0.01 per photo each, and AI culling from $12 per month.
- Limitless: $129 per month, billed annually, with editing, AI tools and culling included for individual photographers.
Prices change, so check Imagen's pricing page before you decide. For a 700-image wedding on pay-as-you-go, the core edit is cheap. The real cost is somewhere else.
Why wedding photographers look for an Imagen alternative
You are still the editor
AI applies your look; it doesn't check it. Every gallery still needs a review pass: mixed light at the reception, a second shooter's camera, a backlit ceremony. For some photographers that review is 20 minutes. For others it is most of a day, especially on difficult weddings.
The profile drifts
An AI profile learns from what you feed it. Venues, seasons and your own style change, so profiles need retraining, and a profile trained on summer outdoor weddings can struggle with a dark winter reception.
Seasonal volume
An annual subscription makes sense if you shoot all year. If you shoot 25 weddings between May and October, you are paying for the quiet months too.
You want your time back, not a faster tool
This is the big one. Some photographers don't want to edit faster; they want to stop editing. That is a different product.
The four kinds of Imagen alternative, by who edits and who checks the result. The main alternatives
1. Aftershoot (another AI app)
Aftershoot started as an AI culling tool and now covers editing and retouching too. On its pricing page at the time of writing, plans are sold per module (Select for culling, Edit, Retouch) or as a bundle, with the full Complete bundle at $50 per month billed annually month by month, and a free 30-day trial.
Best for: photographers who like the AI approach but want culling and editing in one subscription. Same trade-off as Imagen: you still review every gallery.
2. Plan-based editing companies (human editors)
Companies like ShootDotEdit employ teams of editors and sell monthly or annual plans. A human edits every frame, and you don't have to review as carefully.
Best for: studios with steady volume all year. Watch for: plan commitments in months you don't shoot, and whether you get the same editor each time. Our ShootDotEdit alternatives guide compares this model in more detail.
3. Per-wedding human studios
Studios like RawFixer charge per wedding, with no subscription. A dedicated lead editor learns your style from your own galleries, edits in your Lightroom catalog, and checks consistency across the whole set before it comes back.
Best for: seasonal shooters who want to hand off editing completely and pay only in the months they shoot. Not ideal for: photographers who need edited files back within an hour, or who want to tweak every frame themselves anyway; an AI app is faster and cheaper for that.
4. A private freelance editor
One person who edits for a handful of photographers. You get a direct relationship and someone who knows your work deeply.
Best for: photographers who want one human and can plan around that person's calendar. Watch for: capacity in peak season and what happens when they are ill or on holiday. Our guide to private photo editors covers how to vet one.
Side-by-side
| Option | Who edits | How you pay | Who reviews | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Imagen | AI profile | Per photo + base fee, or annual plan | You | Consistent shooters who want speed |
| Aftershoot | AI | Monthly or annual plan | You | Culling + editing in one app |
| Plan-based company | Human team | Monthly or annual plan | Light review | Year-round volume |
| Per-wedding studio (RawFixer) | Dedicated lead editor | Per wedding, no subscription | Light review | Seasonal shooters handing off fully |
| Private editor | One person | Per image or per wedding | Light review | One-to-one relationship |
How to choose
- Do you enjoy editing and just want it faster? Stay with AI: Imagen or Aftershoot.
- Do you want to stop editing? Choose a human option.
- Do you shoot all year? A plan can make sense. Mostly in season? Pay per wedding.
- How hard are your weddings? Dark receptions, mixed light and multiple shooters are where AI review time grows and humans earn their fee.
Whichever way you go, test it on a real, difficult wedding before you switch, not on a sunny outdoor elopement. And if you use AI and humans side by side, our AI vs human colourist comparison explains where each one tends to win.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Imagen alternative?
It depends on what you want to change. Aftershoot is the closest AI alternative. If you want humans to edit with no heavy review, choose a plan-based editing company for year-round volume or a per-wedding studio for seasonal volume.
How much does Imagen cost?
At the time of writing, Imagen's pay-as-you-go colour correction starts at $0.05 per photo plus a $7 monthly base fee, and its Limitless plan is $129 per month billed annually. Check Imagen's pricing page for current rates.
Is a human editor better than Imagen?
Not always. AI is faster and cheaper for consistent, well-lit work you'll review yourself. A human editor is better when galleries have difficult light or you want to hand off editing without reviewing every frame.
Can I use Imagen and a human editor together?
Yes. Some photographers use AI for simple sessions and send weddings with difficult light to a human editor. Keep one style reference so both produce the same look.
